ABSTRACT:
This thesis aims to examine the “dark veils” (zulmānī perde) and “luminous veils” (nūrānī perde)
found in the Divan of Ümmî Sinan, one of the Sufi poets of the seventeenth century. In this regard, in
addition to the concept of “veil” (perde), concepts that have an obstructive nature and refer to states and
behaviors that should be abandoned were identified and examined in Ümmî Sinan Divanı. The identified
couplets and stanzas were interpreted within their textual context using the commentary method (şerh),
one of the qualitative research methods. The fact that the concept of veil and related concepts are addressed
extensively and within a rich context in the Divan played a significant role in selecting this subject as the
focus of the thesis.
It was determined that the luminous veils identified in the Divan (theophany, universe, paradise,
heart, spirit, glory, wine of union, remembrance [dhikr], etc.) are spiritual in nature and divine in origin;
that they represent positive states and generate a spiritual pleasure in the heart. Furthermore, it was
concluded that luminous veils can be overcome through remembrance (dhikr), spiritual discipline (riyāḍa),
and supererogatory acts of worship. In contrast, the dark veils identified in the Divan (pride arising from
worship, the ascetic intellect, selfhood, heedlessness, darkness, the carnal self, hypocrisy, greed, ignorance,
the world, māsivā, etc.) are material in nature and originate from the carnal self, and they evoke a feeling
of remorse in the individual. It was understood that these veils can be overcome through repentance (tawba)
and seeking forgiveness (istighfār).
Based on this thematic study, it is considered that conducting conceptual and thematic studies on
Sufi divans, particularly Ümmî Sinan Divanı, as well as on other Sufi divans, would contribute to the field
