ABSTRACT: This thesis aims to automatically detect defects occurring in photovoltaic (PV) solar cells using deep learning methods on electroluminescence (EL) images. The rapid expansion of solar energy systems necessitates early diagnosis of defects such as micro-cracks, cell fractures, busbar breaks, and potential-induced degradation (PID) in PV panels. Two different datasets were used in this study. The primary dataset consists of 1040 cell images obtained from the production line of GTC Güneş Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş., comprising 540 defective and 500 healthy cells. Secondarily, the publicly available ELPV dataset, which has a four-class structure with significant imbalance, was used to test the generalizability of the proposed approach. During image preprocessing, panel images were segmented into individual cells using an improved RLSA-based segmentation approach, resized to 227×227 pixels, and normalized. Data augmentation techniques were applied to diversify the training data and enhance the model's generalization capability. The proposed model is based on a pre-trained ResNet50 backbone on ImageNet, enhanced with a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) block that provides channel-wise attention. The SE block reweights the channels in the feature maps, highlighting discriminative channels and thus contributing to more effective learning of defect patterns. The model's performance was comparatively evaluated against three baseline models—ResNet50, EfficientNetB0, and MobileNetV2—using a 5-fold stratified cross-validation protocol. While all models achieved high performance in the range of 98-99% on the binary classification task, the proposed ResNet50+SE model achieved the highest performance on the four-class ELPV dataset with 76.09% accuracy and 0.559 F1-score. The SE block provided an improvement of approximately 9.85 percentage points in accuracy compared to plain ResNet50. The findings demonstrate that the SE-enhanced ResNet50 architecture can successfully highlight discriminative features through its channel-wise attention mechanism, particularly under challenging and imbalanced data conditions. Supported by data obtained from a real production line, this study reveals that the proposed model can serve as an automated quality control system in photovoltaic manufacturing processes.
