Doğal Afetlerin Firmaların Finansal Performansı Üzerindeki Etkisi: 6 Şubat 2023 Depremi Örneği
Abstract
ABSTRACT:
Natural disasters have significant effects on economic and financial systems. In particular, earthquakes can cause disruptions in production activities and changes in the financial structures of firms. This study examines the effects of the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, on the financial performance of firms listed on Borsa İstanbul (BIST) and headquartered in the regions affected by the earthquake. Quarterly data covering the period from the third quarter of 2010 to the fourth quarter of 2024 were used. Return on assets (ROA), capital expenditures (CAPEX), and market value (PD) were examined as dependent variables, and the earthquake effect was included in the models through a dummy variable. Driscoll-Kraay robust standard errors were used in the panel data analysis. The results show that the earthquakes had statistically significant and negative effects on return on assets and market value, while no statistically significant effect was found on capital expenditures.
In addition, firm size had a positive effect on return on assets, whereas financial leverage had a negative effect. The study demonstrates that natural disasters can affect firm-level financial performance and market value.
