Abstract

ABSTRACT: The amount of sediment carried in the rivers is a concrete measure of the erosion occurring in the basin, and together with other hydrological parameters, it is significantly related to the flow rate of the river. This situation has highlighted the strong relationship between flow and sediment for sediment monitoring purposes. By using the sediment key curves prepared for this purpose, it also allowed the sediment content to be determined with the help of flow values that are relatively easy to measure. In this study, using the flow and sediment values measured in Yeşilırmak river; It is aimed to predict sediment values by developing regression analysis based sediment key curve and ANN models. EIE and DSI data of Durucasu, Fatlı, Gömelönü and Çiçekbükü stations on the Yeşilırmak basin were used in the study. First of all, for the regression analysis method, the flow rate was taken as the independent variable and the sediment values were taken as the dependent variable, and the equations with the highest correlation coefficient were obtained. All available data were used to obtain equality. In order to test the equations, sediment values were obtained against all measured flow values; were compared with the measured sediment values. Secondly, in the artificial neural networks method, single or double hidden layers and different network topologies with varying numbers of neurons were created by using the MATLAB software Neural Network Toolbox. Current value is used as input. 70% of the data was used for training and 30% for testing. ANN model was produced using the obtained results. A comparison was made between the sediment values calculated with the models obtained by both methods and the measured sediment values, taking into account the r and Root Mean Error Squares (RMSE). Higher r values were obtained by ANN method at all stations; The calculated values and the measured values showed better overlap. Relatively low r values (0.796 for ANN; 0.363 for Regression) were obtained with both methods only at Fatlı station. At other stations, r values above 0.9 were obtained for A and above 0.8 for regression analysis in general. However, it was seen that the models did not provide a good overlap for low flow values. In addition, since the current measured data do not show a normal distribution, it is understood that it will be difficult to represent the variable conditions in the future. As a result, the most valid way to monitor sediment transport in rivers in a healthy way; is to use advanced technology for direct measurement and data supply. However, in cases where sediment measurement is not possible, it has been concluded that the prediction models obtained by artificial neural network method have a high potential in sediment monitoring.
