dc.description.abstractÖZET: Bu tez, Asif Khan’ın Willkommen ve Sharmila Chauhan’ın Nothing to Declare adlı oyunlarında göçmen kimliğinin çağdaş İngiliz tiyatrosunda nasıl temsil edildiğini inceler.
T: This thesis examines the representation of migrant identity in contemporary British theatre through Asif Khan’s Willkommen and Sharmila Chauhan’s Nothing to Declare. The study considers migration not only as an experience of displacement but also as a process shaped by war, borders, language, family memory, colonial legacies, and the search for belonging. Willkommen addresses Ammar’s experience of uncertainty from a child’s perspective after he is forced to leave his country because of war. Through recurring images of the sea, borders, crowds, and the discourse of “welcome,” the play reveals the fragility of the sense of safety and acceptance. Nothing to Declare focuses on the experiences of identity, belonging, assimilation, and memory within a family that first migrates from India to Uganda and subsequently from Uganda to Britain. In the play, suitcases and dog tags emerge as objects that carry intergenerational memories and traces of Britain’s imperial past. The theoretical framework of the study draws on postcolonial theory, diaspora studies, and debates on cultural identity. Accordingly, the analysis employs the concepts of cultural mimicry, otherness, belonging, representation, and memory. Critical discourse analysis is used to examine how migrant identities are represented on stage, while the characters, spaces, objects, and use of language are analysed from a postcolonial perspective. The study demonstrates that migration is not constructed in either play solely as a narrative of victimhood or assimilation; rather, it is staged through loss, resistance, memory, and the formation of new modes of belonging.en_US
