Abstract

ABSTRACT: Radon (222Rn) is a colourless, odourless and radioactive gas that cannot be observed by human sense and which makes % 50 of radiation we are exposed to. When exposed in high doses of radon, it causes a number of illnesses notably lung cancer. Thus the number of researches on measurement to determine the 222Rn concentrations in waters a vital need for all creatures has increased dramatically recently. The aim of this study is to determine 222Rn concentration in drinking waters in Batman Province and to find out how much dose people living in Batman province are exposed to it annually by calculating the radioactive dose stemming from waters. Furthermore, it is aimed to compose a data base for our country which is on the verge of entering EU. Water samples were analysed with the AlphaGUARD PQ 2000PRO radon detector produced by Genitron Instruments and the results obtained in this study were compared with the international recommended values. The results obtained from this study for radon concentration ranged from 0.883 ± 0.349 Bq/L to 0.195 ± 0.103 Bq/L, and mean concentration was found as 0.455 Bq/L.
