ABSTRACT:
This thesis, titled “The Theopolitical Aspect of al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Aḥkām: A Muʿtazilite Perspective,” aims to examine the Muʿtazilite understanding of al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām in terms of its theological and theopolitical dimensions. The study consists of an introduction and three main chapters. In the introduction, the subject, aim, scope, and method of the research are presented; the concepts of al-asmāʾ, al-aḥkām, and theopolitics are explained; and their relation to the Muʿtazilite discourse of justice is evaluated. In the first chapter, the conceptual and historical background of theopolitical thought is discussed. Examples of theopolitical thought from antiquity to the modern period are briefly addressed, and the relationship between religious issues and the political sphere in early Islamic thought is examined. This chapter also focuses on the theological foundations of al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām and evaluates the approaches of different theological schools to major sin, faith, and judgment. In the second chapter, the principles of tawḥīd and justice are discussed within the framework of the basic teachings of Muʿtazila. The place of al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām in Muʿtazilite theology is explained through the concepts of al-waʿd wa-l-waʿīd, al-manzila bayna-l-manzilatayn, human acts, and free will. Finally, the issues of imamate, al-amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa-n-nahy ʿan al-munkar, the political dimension of free will, and the influence of the just conception of God on political morality are examined. In this way, it is demonstrated that al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām is not merely an individual discussion of faith and sin, but also a matter related to social order, political responsibility, and the understanding of authority. As a result, it is concluded that the Muʿtazilite understanding of al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām establishes a strong relationship between divine justice, human responsibility, and political morality.
