ABSTRACT:
In this thesis, the secondary load frequency control of an airport microgrid system
comprising renewable energy sources, an energy storage system, and electric vehicles was
investigated. For this purpose, an isolated airport microgrid model consisting of a wind
turbine generator, a photovoltaic system, a diesel generator, a battery energy storage
system, electric vehicles, electric aircraft, and load components was developed. For the
secondary load frequency control of the modeled airport microgrid, classical proportionalintegral-
derivative, tilt-integral-derivative, and fractional-order proportional-integralderivative
controller structures were established, alongside fuzzy logic-based structures
that dynamically adjust the parameter values of these classical controllers. The ant colony
optimization algorithm was utilized to determine the initial parameter values of the
employed controller structures. Herein, an objective function incorporating the Integral of
absolute error, integral of time-weighted absolute error, integral of squared error, and
integral of time-weighted squared error performance indices was formulated for the ant
colony optimization algorithm.
To evaluate the performance of the proposed control structures, four distinct operating
scenarios were established within the airport microgrid system. In the first scenario, it was
assumed that the generation from renewable energy sources and the load demand are under
normal operating conditions. In the second scenario, the generation from renewable energy
sources was assumed to be high while the load demand remains at constant operating
conditions. The third scenario presents an operating condition characterized by low
generation from renewable energy sources and high load demand. In the final scenario,
parametric variations within the airport microgrid model were introduced. In this last
scenario, both the generation from renewable energy sources and the load were considered
to be under normal operating conditions.
Both the classical and fuzzy logic-based structures of the three different controllers utilized
in this study were comparatively analyzed for each scenario. The obtained analysis results
were presented through figures illustrating the system frequency responses and tables
detailing the performance index values. Based on the overall analysis results, it was
concluded that for all three fundamental controllers, the fuzzy logic-based structures
improved the frequency stability of the airport microgrid system across all operating
conditions compared to their classical counterparts.
