T: This thesis analyzes John Clifford’s 1988 stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’s canonical novel Great Expectations within the framework of generic transformation, medium specificity, and dramaturgical translation involved in adapting a novel for the stage. The main goal of the study is to show how a story-based literary work spanning a long period changes when brought onto the stage with its visual and auditory performance elements, and to explore the theoretical aspects of this process. The socio-political context behind this theatrical adaptation is shaped by the neoliberal policies and the commercialization of social life in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. While Clifford reshapes the Victorian class hierarchy and the desire for social status through the stage, his adaptation also reflects the New Right politics of the 1980s. In the play, Pip’s struggle for social mobility matches the competitive success mentality of the neoliberal individual (Homo Economicus). Meanwhile, the tight, closed space of Satis House appears as a claustrophobic domestic space, created as a response to the decline of the public space. Lawyer Jaggers’s detached professionalism and his clerk Wemmick’s split identity highlight how market logic breaks down human psychology. The theoretical framework relies on adaptation theory (Linda Hutcheon), theatre semiotics, and dramaturgical translation (Patrice Pavis), using concepts such as appropriation, reparations, adapturgy, and the cash-nexus. Based on a critical reading of the text, this study shows that an adaptation is not merely a secondary copy tied to its source material. Instead, it is an independent work of art that turns a literary text into a lasting critique of the social system across different mediums.en_US
