Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aims to examine the sectarian movements during the reign of Sultan Melikshah I in the Great Seljuk State and the reflections of these movements on state policies. The research is based on classical Islamic sources as well as modern academic studies. In this context, the rise of the Hanafi-Maturidi understanding, the struggle against Shiite-origin sectarian movements, and the influence of the Abbasid Caliphate on Seljuk state policies are discussed. The study evaluates in detail the effects of various sects and movements on the relationship between the Seljuk State and society, as well as the role undertaken by the central authority in this process. The findings reveal that the sectarian policies of the Seljuk administration during the reign of Melikshah I were not limited solely to the religious sphere; rather, they also played an effective role in maintaining social order and political stability. In particular, the support of the Hanafi-Maturidi understanding contributed to the strengthening of central authority, while it is understood that deliberate policies were adopted to limit the influence of oppositional elements, especially the Batinite movements. Furthermore, the influences of the Fatimids and Abbasids, along with other sectarian movements, had a determining impact on the social and political structure of the period and shaped the decision-making processes of the Seljuk administration. In this respect, the study aims to contribute both to a better understanding of state-society relations in the Seljuk period and to the evaluation of the development of Islamic sectarian history.
