Abstract

ABSTRACT: Existence occupies a central position in Sayf al-Dīn al-Āmidī’s thought, particularly in understanding various issues concerning theology and possible beings. This study aims to examine al-Āmidī’s views on existence, as presented in the context of different philosophical and theological issues, within a coherent framework. It seeks to identify the conceptual and argumentative dimensions of his understanding of existence and to clarify its place in later kalām thought. The study consists of an introduction and four chapters. The first chapter addresses the issues of al-umūr al-ʿāmma in al-Āmidī’s thought, examining the fundamental concepts of existence, its definability and commonality, the relationship between existence and quiddity, and the knowability of existence. The second chapter focuses on the Necessary Existent (wājib al-wujūd), examining the proofs for God’s existence, His ontological distinction from possible beings, His unity, and ontological issues related to the divine attributes. The third chapter examines the nature and ontological structure of possible existence, with particular emphasis on substance, body, and accident. The fourth chapter investigates the ontological status of the nonexistent (maʿdūm), its epistemological implications, and other judgments concerning it. Finally, the possibility of a third category between existence and nonexistence is examined within the framework of the theory of states (aḥwāl) and the relationship between cause and effect. The findings indicate that al-Āmidī adopts an argument-based methodological approach and critically engages with both theological and philosophical traditions, offering original assessments of contested ontological issues, particularly al-umūr al-ʿāmma, nonexistence, states (aḥwāl), and causality. By presenting al-Āmidī’s understanding of existence from a comprehensive perspective, this study aims to contribute to a clearer understanding of his ontological approach within later kalām thought and to the existing scholarship in this field.
