ABSTRACT:
Discharging waste dyes into water disrupts ecosystem balance, pollutes drinking water sources, and harms biodiversity. Various methods have been developed to remove dyes found in wastewater. One of the most effective methods is adsorption. One of the most effective methods is adsorption. Carbon-based materials are among the most widely used adsorbents in recent years due to their porous structure, high efficiency, and absorptive properties.
The structure and morphological properties of the resulting adsorbents were investigated using FT-IR, vibrational magnetometry (VSM), BET, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. The biochar derived from biomass was named as BAC, while the magnetic biochar was named as MAC. The surface areas of the obtained BAC and MAC adsorbents were determined to be 700.4 m²/g and 408.24 m²/g, respectively. The adsorption of methylene blue onto BAC and MAC was studied by examining the effects of temperature, adsorption time and initial dye concentration to determine the optimal conditions. The adsorption equilibrium time for both adsorbents was found to be approximately 25 minutes. The adsorption of methylene blue onto BAC and MAC was analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, and based on the correlation coefficient, it was suggested that the Langmuir isotherm is more appropriate for both adsorbents. It was determined that the adsorption of methylene blue onto BAC followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while its adsorption onto MAC followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic data indicated that the adsorption of methylene blue onto both BAC and MAC occurred spontaneously and, was endothermic. In addition, desorption experiments were conducted to recover the adsorbents, and no changes were observed for BAC up to 7 cycles. This study facilitated the recycling of cherry pomace (Prunus cerasifera), a bio-waste, and resulted in the production of an alternative product.
