Abstract

ABSTRACT: In this study, the chemical compositions and antifungal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of Crataegus orientalis Pall. ex M.Bieb. var. orientalis, Crataegus monogyna Jacq. var. monogyna and Crataegus azarolus L. collected in Bingöl Province were comparatively investigated. Es-sential oil yields were determined as 0.4%, 0.3%, and 0.7% for C. orientalis var. orienta-lis, C. monogyna var. monogyna, and C. azarolus, respectively. GC-MS analysis identi-fied 2-hexenal (26.85%), p-cymene (8.41%), and heptacosane (8.01%) as the major com-ponents of Crataegus orientalis var. orientalis essential oil. The major components of C. monogyna var. monogyna essential oil were nonakosan (16.12%), geraniol (9.79%), and heptacosane (9.12%), whereas tricosane (23.50%), pentacosane (21.10%), and heptaco-sane (13.80%) predominated in C. azarolus essential oil. The antifungal activity of C. azarolus essential oil against Ascosphaera apis was evalua-ted using the agar dilution method. The mycelial colony diameter, which was 90 mm in the control group, decreased to 68.33, 65.00, 58.67, and 53.67 mm following applications of 5, 10, 20, and 40 μL, respectively. The highest application amount produced app-roximately 40.37% inhibition. According to the disk diffusion results, C. azarolus produ-ced wider inhibition zones than the other taxa against most of the tested microorganisms, with the highest value of 20 mm recorded against Bacillus megaterium. At the highest tested concentration, DPPH radical scavenging activities were 80.10%, 80.02%, and 70.62% for C. monogyna var. monogyna, Crataegus orientalis var. oriental-is, and C. azarolus, respectively. Although C. azarolus exhibited the highest TAS value, it also showed the highest TOS and OSI values. These findings demonstrate that the in-vestigated Crataegus taxa possess distinct chemical profiles and selective biological acti-vities. Nevertheless, standardization, quantitative antimicrobial assays, toxicity assess-ments, and in vivo studies are required to confirm their potential applications.
