Sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum L.), a member of the family Amaryllidaceae, naturally grows on the dune coasts of the southern Mediterranean countries. In this study, Pancratium maritimum L. bulbs were kept in solutions of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 % sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 minutes. The deformation rate is calculated in percentage. After the waiting period the bulbs were washed 3 times for 5 min with sterile distilled pure water and were transferred in a hormone-free MS medium. After 10 days the contamination rates occurring in MS medium were determined in percentage. The bulbs that had been kept in 2 % and 3% sodium hypochlorite solution showed no deformation, while the contamination rate was 100%. The most effective surface sterilization was achieved by keeping the bulbs in sodium hypochlorite solutions of 5-6% for 30 and 35 minutes. With the increase of sodium hypochlorite concentrations and exposure times the surface sterilization of bulbs also increased, but the bulb deformation rates increased too.tr_TR
