This paper provides a brief overview of toponymy and explores the relationship between placenames and broader cultural-political domains, including language, history, political science, collective memory, and state-driven naming policies. Naming processes reflect a community's collective memory, historical trajectory, and socio-cultural interactions. As a specialized branch of toponymy, microtoponymy documents and analyzes minor, unrecorded geographic entities known primarily to local residents, such as valleys, fields, hills, and springs. Focusing on a case study of the village of Qopiza Jorîn (officially Yukarıkopuz) in the Eleşkirt district of Ağrı, this study first outlines the historical and political context of the systematic alteration of Kurdish placenames in Turkey. It then applies a structural linguistic approach to document local microtoponyms collected through fieldwork. Finally, the paper defines several collected Kurmanji Kurdish terms that function effectively as precise regional geographical terminology.

This study presents a comparative analysis of the myth of the Pepûk (cuckoo) bird within Kurdish oral tradition, focusing specifically on Kurmanji and Zazaki variants. Globally recognized as a mystical and mythological figure, the cuckoo carries diverse symbolic meanings across different cultures. In Kurdish folklore, the myth centers on a structural theme of shape-shifting or metamorphosis, typically involving an orphaned sister and brother driven to tragedy by a cruel stepmother or a tragic misunderstanding during the harvesting of gundelia (kenger/kereng). Driven by intense remorse after accidentally causing her brother's death, the protagonist implores God to transform her into a bird. Transformed into the Pepûk, she spends eternity mourning her brother through her sorrowful song. This chapter examines the common motifs, underlying structural functions, and regional variations across Kurmanji and Zazaki narrative texts. To provide a comprehensive conceptual framework, the study draws comparisons with global folklore—such as European and Mari traditions—analyzing how the bird embodies themes of poverty, grief, and seasonal transition. Furthermore, the study explores a genre-based debate regarding whether these accounts should be classified strictly as legends (efsane) or folktales (çîrok/sanik), noting that while they employ traditional folktale opening formulas, they command genuine belief within the community. Finally, the paper documents the transition of the Pepûk motif from oral culture into written Kurdish literature, tracing its appearances from classical poetry (including the works of Melayê Cizîrî, Ehmedê Xanî, and Feqiyê Teyran) to modern Zazaki novels, short films, and contemporary cultural expressions.

This study analyzes "Şewêş," written by Fûad Temoyî in 1913, which holds the distinction of being the first short story in Kurdish literature. Published in the journal Roji Kurd, the story remains unfinished as its continuation was never printed. Focusing on the dramatic depiction of a poor, orphaned ten-year-old boy and his shepherd father, the narrative portrays the harsh social realities of its era. Utilizing Edgar Allan Poe’s literary concept of the "unity of effect," this article evaluates how the author skillfully evokes a continuous and powerful emotional response of pity and empathy from the reader, demonstrating that the story's incomplete nature does not diminish its cohesive emotional impact and structural success.
