The oxidative stress, depending on many factors in the etiology of developing cancer caused by reactive oxygen species, plays an important role. In our study, 7, 12-dimethylbenz-[a]anthracene (DMBA) was applied in Guinea Pigs, the alpha lipoic acid (α-LA) has antioxidant properties was investigated protective role against to levels of macro and trace elements in brain. In experiments; totally 24 adult male Guinea Pigs were randomly divided into 4 equal groups (control, DMBA, α-LA and DMBA+α-LA) containing same numbers. As a result of the analysis in Guinea Pigs brain with the aid of ICP-AES; it was found that the level of calcium from macro elements in DMBA group increased according to control group (P<0.01) and decreased in DMBA+α-LA group (P<0.01), that was in the same levels with control group. Magnesium decreased in DMBA group according to control group (P<0.01) and DMBA+α-LA group and increased in close level of control group. Regarding trace elements, it was seemed that copper levels compared with the control group decreased in DMBA group (P<0.01) and DMBA+α-LA group, it was same level with control group. It was observed that the level zinc decreased according to control group in DMBA group (P<0.01) and increased in DMBA+α-LA group (P<0.01). In addition, it was obtained that levels of iron and manganese in between groups were not significant (P>0.05). As a result, it can be said that from the point of macro and trace elements, the lipoic acid (α-LA) was indicated neuroprotective effect for protection of important organs such as brain from the oxidative stress.

Twenty durum wheat pure lines obtained from landraces collected from southwestern districts of Konya and 5 durum wheat cultivars were evaluated under rain fed conditions in Konya between 2005 and 2008 in a 3 replicates randomized complete block design to estimate genetic variation and heritability for grain yield and 6 quality traits. The overall goal of the study was to improve pure lines from durum wheat landraces for low input agricultural areas of the Central Anatolian region and similar environmental conditions. The broad sense heritability estimates ranged from 12.9% (particle size index) to 50.0% (semolina color). The highest expected genetic advance as a percentage of mean was recorded for grain yield (8.35%), followed by semolina color (5.50%). Mean grain yield values of the pure lines from landraces ranged from 1.85 to 2.85 t ha-1. Out of 20 pure lines, 14 had above average grain yield of 4 standard cultivars. Based on mean performance, pure line 4 was superior with respect to grain yield; pure line 5 was superior with respect to mini SDS sedimentation and grain yield. Comparisons between the pure lines and the modern cultivars led to the conclusion that grain yield, protein content, mini SDS sedimentation, and semolina color of some pure lines were usually higher than those of modern cultivars. According to the results, some pure lines could be tested in winter durum wheat registration trials, and some lines could be used as genetic material to broaden the genetic basis of durum wheat breeding programs all over the world. © TUBITAK.

2,6-Bis(5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)pyridines (3, 4) were used for the first time as ligand in ruthenium catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone. The in situ prepared three-component system Ru(II)/tridentate triamine ligands (3a-3d, 4a-4d) and KOH catalysed the transfer hydrogenation reaction of acetophenone in good yields under mild conditions. © 2009 SIOC, CAS, Shanghai, & WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Bond strength of tension lap-splices in full scale self-compacting concrete beams

Twelve full-scale beam specimens (2000 × 300 × 200 mm) were tested in positive bending with the loading system designed to determine the effect of self-compacting concrete (SCC) and the diameter of reinforcement on bond-slip characteristics of tension lap-slices. The specimens of lap-splice series were tested with lap-spliced bars centred on the midspan in a region of constant positive bending. The splice length of the deformed bars was set at 310 mm in all beam specimens. This value was selected to develop a steel stress less than yield to ensure splitting mode failure in all beam specimens. The beams were cast with the 16 and 20 mm bars (the tension lap-splices) in the bottom position. The casting procedure was the same for all beams. Two types of concrete were used in the experimental programme, including normal concrete (NC), with a slump less than 68 mm, as the comparatively low-slump concrete, and SCC as an extremely high-workability concrete. The variables used in this study were the concrete type (SCC and NC) and reinforcing bar size (16 and 20 mm). It was found that as the diameter of the steel bar increased from 16 to 20 mm the bond strength decreased regardless of concrete type. Finally, although the compressive strength of concretes was almost the same and there were slight differences between the diameters of lap-spliced bars, the normalised bond strengths of the SCC mixes were about 4% higher than those of the NC mixes for both bar diameters, indicating that the reinforcing bar was completely covered by SCC due to its filling ability. © TÜBİTAK.
